“Kiran Bir Sethi shows how her groundbreaking Riverside School in India teaches kids life’s most valuable lesson: “I can.” Watch her students take local issues into their own hands, lead other young people, even educate their parents.” - Ted.com
Here’s the thing… The children are literally our future. If we are not guiding them in the right direction, where will Earth be in 25, 50, 100 years? We have to be more hands on, more insightful. We have to show them that we care.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS?

Well, I don’t usually do this, I don’t think… Well I’ve probably done them on here… But I’m going to start paying attention to my resolutions…
- Pay more attention to Pedestal. With school & working 2 jobs it’s been so crazy, but I love this blog and its message so much that I’m going to be sure to make time for it.
- Begin blue printing my organization for young girls. I’ve already decided to go back to my original major which was psychology, but now, thanks to a random craigslist search for a roommate/interview, I’ve decided on a specific field which is - guidance counseling. The organization is going to be something similar to Girl Scouts, but focused more on self esteem, career building, everyday life issues, how to help the community, etc…
- Volunteer more! I’ve done a little volunteering in my 20 years, but there’s so much more that can be done.
I’m sure I have many more “resolutions”, but these are my main 3.
What are your resolutions?
Email me at pedestalbymj@gmail.com and let me know. You can also email me for anything else… Questions, advice, etc.

20 year old Natalie Warne talks about her journey with Invisible Children, becoming a young activist, and achieving goals.
We have to teach our young girls that they have the ability to be whatever they want to be. I feel like one of the main reasons why our youth are struggling right now is because we are not encouraging them the way we need to. Sit down and talk to the kids; talk to them about life, about growing up, about what they can be. We need to guide this next generation, they need to hear this message.

With all the busyness going on with Thanksgiving, to Christmas, to New Years, it’s easy to forget what life is really about. Sometimes we get lost in all the cooking and gift buying that we lose track of how others are in need. And sometimes we forget how to really give from the heart, whether that be a smile, a hug, etc.
I saw a gif of this in my timeline and I had to figure out what it was from. I searched the interweb and this is what I came up with.
This little girl cuts her hair because her brother has cancer. When he arrives at home she has it bundled in her shirt to give to him.
I believe this little girls giving can teach us how to live selflessly. She did whatever she had to do to put a smile on her brother’s face, and as a race of people, and of women, we have to remember sometimes that to make someone smile could be the greatest gift of all.

“Anthropologist Helen Fisher takes on a tricky topic — love –- and explains its evolution, its biochemical foundations and its social importance. She closes with a warning about the potential disaster inherent in antidepressant abuse.” - Ted.com
I watched this talk sometime last year when I was going through last year times… haha, but I found it to be rather interesting the way we as human beings decided to create a meaning to this life that we live. I feel that Ms. Helen Fisher does a great way of exploring and explaining the process taken to understand love as it is “felt” now.

So, where have I been?
Well, I finally feel like it’s time to get Pedestal started up again after a long 11 months of not so steady posting. The reason I took such a long break away from Pedestal is because I want to always give my ALL to this blog and the past 11 months have been hectic ones.
- I finally got a new place. After a good year or so living at my grandparents I knew it was time to get out on my own again. I’m finally almost completely settled in now, so I’m happy & happy to be back.
- Started back at school after a good year & a half away. There is so much work, but I think I’ve got a schedule down enough to be committed to Pedestal.
- Relationships happenings and mishaps… MOSTLY mishaps haha, Oh my gosh is the dating life of a 20 year old CRAZY. I’m finally over dating in general & I’m ready to focus all of my time on A) School, B) My house, C) Pedestal, & D) Work
- Speaking of work! I’ve also gotten a new job which is pretty chill :)

The point is, I’m just glad to be back. Back to my ladies, back to inspiration, & back to positivity.

I just came across this website named “Sprouter” which is a website to help entrepreneurs start up their businesses. The website allows people who have been successful in entrepreneurship to answer the questions of those who are trying to be successful as well. What’s even better about this website… for Pedestal at least, is that it was founded by Sarah Prevette.
Interested in getting your own business started? Visit this website.
I would suggest that you visit Sprouter even if you’re just curious about how people became successful in their own businesses. Very informative, very inspiring.
(Just click on the pink title to visit Sprouter.)

Janet Echelman was rejected from art school after art school, but never let that stop her. “Art Unusual” is an understatement for her creations. Her innovative art ideas amaze.
She’s also working on a project for City Hall, Philadelphia.
Watch & see her in action.

Pedestal is a blog that I created back in October of 2009 to empower young women. My intention was to be the person to influence positive things that women weren’t hearing from their main sources; mothers & fathers. So far, Pedestal has been going almost two years strong & I hope to continue this blog until the very end. My goal is to eventually turn it in to a monthly magazine; if Cosmo can do it, so can I :)
Supposedly 2012 is the end for many people, but it is definitely just the beginning for Pedestal. There will be interviews with amazing women doing amazing things, events, more music, and lots of new things!
Get ready :)Please check it out, give me feedback, what would you like to see on Pedestal that isn’t on there, etc.

I think all women go through periods where we hate this about ourselves, we don’t like that. It’s great to get to a place where you dismiss anything you’re worried about. I find flaws attractive. I find scars attractive.Angelina Jolie
